MLS stands for Major League Soccer and is the professional soccer league for men in the United States. In all of my previous posts I have solely talked about the Champions League and English Premiere League. It is time I say a little bit about the teams and players of MLS and also the comparison between European leagues and the MLS.
The league is split up into two conferences, Eastern and Western conference. The Eastern conference includes the Chicago Fire, Columbus Crew SC, D.C United, Montreal Impact, New England Revolution, New York City FC, New York Red Bulls, Orlando City SC, Philadelphia Union, and Toronto FC. The Western conference consists of the Colorado Rapids, FC Dallas, Houston Dynamo, Portland Timbers, Real Salt Lake, San Jose Earthquakes, Seattle Sounders FC, Sporting KC, and the Vancouver Whitecaps.
There are currently 20 teams in the league and there are plans to have new teams all the way through 2018. In 2017 they are supposed to add a team based in Atlanta and also plans to add another LA team called Los Angeles FC. In 2018 MLS is adding a team in Minnesota. That brings the league to an all time high of 23 teams. The newest teams in the league right now that were only added in 2015 are New York City FC and Orlando SC.
There are many quality European league players that have come to the MLS. Some of these players include, Thierry Henry, Tim Cahill, Ricardo Kaka, David Beckham, Andrea Pirlo, and many more. The infamous Steven Gerrard, former Liverpool player has currently signed with the LA Galaxy. More and more players are moving to the MLS which brings up a lot of debate as to why they would rather play stateside.
A lot of people like the European league better than the league here in the states, Nicholas Esandrio, senior at Wamogo High School, says
"the MLS lacks the versatility of ethnicity unlike the EPL which is filled with talented youthful soccer players."
Matt Rollins, Wamogo student and EPL fan, says that "Premiere League has world class players and is a much more talented and physical league than the MLS."
Some think that the men's league in the U.S is where European legends come to retire. Meaning that the MLS is of lower class and stature than European football. But overall, the international players coming in from different leagues ramps up the competition and quality of the game.
